Although it may come as a surprise, miscarriage is a frequently occurring occurrence. Studies show that a significant proportion, ranging from one-quarter to one-half, of all conceptions may result in miscarriage. 

Often, these incidents happen very early in the conception journey, to the extent that a woman may not even be aware of her pregnancy due to the absence of a missed period. In some cases, blood tests (referred to as chemical pregnancies) can detect these early losses, but there may not be any other noticeable clinical signs of pregnancy.


Maintaining a positive outlook, it’s important to note that experiencing one or even two miscarriages does not hint that a couple will be unable to have a child in the future. It is common for pregnancies to occur successfully after a miscarriage, and there are several reasons to be hopeful.

A miscarriage refers to the natural termination of a pregnancy before reaching the 20th week of gestation. When miscarriages occur repeatedly, it is referred to as recurrent pregnancy loss or recurrent miscarriage.

Indicators and manifestations of a miscarriage include vaginal bleeding followed by back pain, abdominal pain, fever, intense cramps, or the passing of blood clots containing gray tissue.

Miscarriage can occur due to various factors. In most cases, the cessation of pregnancy occurs as a result of a genetic problem inherent to the embryo. An irregularity in the embryo’s chromosome count, commonly referred to as aneuploidy, often leads to miscarriage.



For a significant portion, approximately 50-60%, of early pregnancy losses, miscarriage is attributed to chromosomal irregularities originating from the mother, the father, or both. This factor ranks as the most prevalent cause of first-trimester miscarriages. 

The most frequently observed genetic abnormality is aneuploidy, characterized by an abnormal number of chromosomes, either exceeding or falling short of the typical count.


Advanced maternal age is a prevalent factor contributing to the increased risk of health conditions that can impact pregnancy and higher chances of eggs possessing chromosomal abnormalities. Consequently, age often serves as a common explanation for miscarriage.


The primary anatomical irregularity frequently observed is a malformed uterus, specifically referred to as a septate uterus. Fibroids or polyps present in the uterus are also linked to miscarriage, but surgical removal of these growths may be a viable option.


Insufficient functioning of the placenta and miscarriage can occur due to abnormal blood clotting. Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APAS) or lupus anticoagulants are frequent causes of such abnormal blood clotting.


The likelihood of experiencing a miscarriage rises when there is an imbalance in hormones, particularly those linked to thyroid disorders and issues with the pituitary gland.

The appropriate course of treatment following a miscarriage is contingent upon the outcomes of our initial fertility assessments:

  • If hormonal imbalances are detected during testing, medical interventions may be recommended.
  • If a structural abnormality is identified in the uterus, surgical interventions, such as fibroid removal, may be advised on a case-by-case basis in consultation with your doctor.
  • In instances where diagnostic tests reveal no structural issues, chromosomal abnormalities, hormonal imbalances, or conditions like fibroids affecting your reproductive system, your doctor at Sishu Fertility may suggest trying to conceive again once your menstrual cycle resumes, typically within 4-6 weeks following a miscarriage.

The primary cause of pregnancy loss often stems from aneuploidy, a genetic anomaly resulting in an abnormal number of chromosomes in the embryo. To address this, preimplantation genetic testing (PGT-A) is employed as a treatment approach. PGT-A enables the genetic examination of embryos before their implantation during in vitro fertilization (IVF). 

By implementing genetic testing, the likelihood of a successful pregnancy and safe childbirth is heightened, while the risk of miscarriage is significantly reduced. This process empowers embryologists to selectively implant only healthy embryos with normal chromosome counts.


A straightforward blood test provides insights into various pregnancy-related hormones, such as progesterone and thyroid hormones, which play a significant role in the process.


Ultrasound technology utilizes sound waves to generate visual representations of organs and other bodily structures, aiding medical professionals in identifying conditions such as fibroids, polyps, and abnormal growths within the uterus that may contribute to infertility and miscarriage.
