Treatment Option For Male Infertility

Treatment for male infertility depends on the underlying cause, severity, and the individual’s overall health and preferences. There are various treatment options available that range from lifestyle changes to medical procedures.

Here are some common fertility treatment options for males:

Treatment using Fertility Drugs

If hormonal imbalances (such as low testosterone) are the cause of infertility. Fertility medications can help boost sperm count.

Antibiotics and Anti-inflammatory Medications can also be used if you have reproductive tract infection and conditions like prostatitis.

Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART)

ART is the best infertility treatment to achieve pregnancy.

    • Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Sperm is collected, washed, and concentrated before being directly inserted into a woman’s uterus around the time of ovulation to increase the chances of fertilization.

    • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In cases of severe male infertility, sperm is combined with eggs outside the body in a laboratory to achieve fertilization. The resulting embryos are then transferred to the woman’s uterus.

A specialized form of IVF where a single sperm is directly injected into an egg. ICSI is particularly useful in cases of low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or when sperm has been surgically retrieved.

Surgical Treatment

Surgery may be needed to correct structural problems or obstructions that affect sperm production or delivery.

      • Varicocelectomy

A surgical procedure to repair varicoceles (enlarged veins in the scrotum) that can affect sperm quality and production. This procedure can improve sperm count and quality in some men.

      • Vasovasostomy or Vasoepididymostomy

Surgery to reverse a vasectomy or to correct blockages in the vas deferens or epididymis, restoring the normal flow of sperm.

      • Surgical Sperm Retrieval

For men with obstructive azoospermia (no sperm in the semen due to blockage) or non-obstructive azoospermia, sperm can be surgically retrieved directly from the testicles or epididymis for use in assisted reproductive techniques like IVF or ICSI. Common methods include:

      • Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE): A biopsy of the testicle to retrieve sperm.
      • Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction (Micro-TESE): A more precise form of TESE using a microscope to locate viable sperm.
      • Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA): Retrieval of sperm from the epididymis using a fine needle.
      • Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (MESA): A more precise form of PESA using a surgical microscope.

Natural and Alternative Therapies

Some natural and alternative therapies may help improve fertility.

    • Acupuncture: Some studies suggest that acupuncture can also help improve sperm quality and reduce stress, potentially enhancing fertility.
    • Herbal Supplements: Certain herbal supplements, like maca root, ashwagandha, or ginseng, may help improve sperm quality and sexual function. However, these should be used under medical supervision.
