Intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatment in Nepal

INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI)

Many couples experience difficulties when trying to conceive a baby. Shishu Fertility Clinic offers effective fertility services to help couples tackle these obstacles and achieve the dream of parenthood.

IUI Basics

IUI or Intrauterine Insemination is a safe fertility treatment that can be completed following simple and relatively painless procedures to conceive a baby. The patient will only experience minimal discomfort and can resume their daily activities immediately after completing the procedure. The patient requires no anesthesia, however, she may be prescribed fertility medication for stimulating ovulation.

IUI involves the process of placing groomed and healthy sperm directly into a woman’s uterus using a thin catheter to increase the possibility of fertilization. The success of the treatment depends on several factors including the age of the patient, the quality of sperm, and the timing of the procedure. Our specialists work closely to determine if IUI is the best option for you considering your age, previous medical history, and current health condition. Before beginning the process, a semen analysis is carried out to identify the health of the male partner’s sperm. And, the timing of the procedure is decided depending on the woman’s ovulation for the highest success possibility.

The Goal

The goal of IUI is to ensure maximum numbers of sperm are transferred to the fallopian tube. This ultimately increases the success rate of fertilization.

During the natural process, the cervix limits the number of sperm that make an entrance to the uterus. This means only a small number of sperm can pass through the fallopian tube. The IUI process bypasses the cervix, and transfers sperm directly to the woman’s uterus during the time of ovulation. This contributes to better chances for the maximum number of sperm to encounter the egg in a short period.

When to Choose IUI

  • When the male partner has a lower sperm count.
  • When the female partner has ovulation disorders.
  • When women experience unexplained infertility.
  • When sperm donors are needed.
  • When the patient is a single woman or a same-sex couple.

Fertility Medications and IUI

In several cases, fertility medications are used together with IUI for increasing the possibilities of successful fertilization. The medications help by stimulating the ovaries to produce more eggs, which are used for fertilization by the sperm transferred through the IUI procedure.

The combination of IUI and medication has been identified as beneficial, especially for those with unexplained infertility and endometriosis.

Ovarian Stimulation

In general, a woman produces one egg from her ovaries in the normal ovulation process. So, fertility medications may be used to result in the production of more eggs from ovaries. This increases the chances of fertilization and conceiving a baby.

Ovulation Time

To determine the pre-eminent time for IUI, it becomes crucial to monitor the ovulation cycle of the patient. Our team of experts will monitor your cycle through ultrasound to track when ovulation is likely to occur. In general, it takes one or two days for ovulation to occur.

Semen Preparation/Semen Analysis

Before we begin IUI, semen analysis may be done to evaluate sperm quality. The healthy and active sperms are then prepared in the laboratory for insemination. During the process, the semen is “washed” to concentrate the sperm, while removing the seminal fluid.

Insemination

The IUI procedure begins once the semen sample is well-prepared. The process is very quick and simple; and takes only a few minutes to complete. After the process, you can immediately carry on with your daily activities. There is no severe pain associated with the process.

Pregnancy Test

After two weeks of the IUI procedure, the patient will return to Shishu Fertility Clinic for the pregnancy test. Upon positive results, further testing is carried out to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
