OVULATION INDUCTION

OVULATION INDUCTION

Most of the time, infertility treatment includes ovulation induction as the first treatment recommended for patients struggling to conceive. In this form of treatment, the patient uses fertility medications to induce ovulation and aid egg production. The overall treatment is simple, safe, and effective for couples struggling to start a family.

The Basics

Ovulation induction is a common fertility treatment that involves the use of medications for the development of egg production in the patient. During the treatment, each patient may respond differently and it is important to build the treatment plan considering the patient’s individual needs. The treatment must ensure to contribute to increasing the number of eggs for aiding the pregnancy possibility, while also making sure that it does not produce excessive eggs that may result in ovarian hyperstimulation.

At Sishu Fertility Clinic, our team of experts monitors the patient’s progress closely through ultrasounds and blood tests to ensure the appropriate dosage of medication and its response.

Ovulation Induction is just the starting step for achieving pregnancy. To result in sperm-egg union, ovulation induction is followed by different types of fertility treatment that may include IVF or IUI treatments. The type of treatment is selected depending on several factors including age, medical history, and fertility goals of the patients.

When to Consider Ovulation Induction

In normal conditions, ovulating women generate one mature egg every 28 days. However, with ovulation induction medication, it can result in an increased number of oocytes. The treatment is recommended for patients commonly under the following conditions.

  • During Anovulation (when ovulation is absent)
  • When a woman is experiencing unexplained infertility
  • When women are experiencing irregular cycles
  • When no male factor infertility is identified
  • When women experience PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)
  • When a woman is identified for hormonal problems

Ovulation medications are classified as fertility drugs that are prescribed to help those patients who are experiencing difficulty with ovulation issues. The medications are available in the form of injections and oral medications.

The ovulation medications help to stimulate the ovaries which aids the release of one or numerous mature eggs. It is important to note that each medication works differently and the decision on the type of medication to use depends on women’s menstrual history and identified infertility type.

Types of Medications

  • Oral Medications

Oral medications are typically the first-line treatment for women with irregular or absent ovulation. The most common types of oral medications include Clomid and Letrozole. They work by aiding one or multiple egg production when patients are not ovulating.

  • Injectable Medications

Injectable Medications are often recommended when the patients are not responding to oral medications or when they require extra eggs. The injectable medications include FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) and LH (Luteinizing Hormone), which aid in the production of follicles in the ovaries.
